    Notes
    • At a community-wide assize trial held in Campbeltown on 14 June 1710 John was found "guilty of [th]e burying of two of his Children in Linen Cloath by his confession". The identities of these children are unknown.

On 25 May 1704 "Jo[h]n INGLIS of the Lowland congregation" married "Margaret NcLoilan of the Irish congregation" in the Lowland Church in Campbeltown. Martin notes that "Nc" is a contraction of the Gaelic prefix "Nic," meaning "daughter of," and that their union is an early example of a "mixed" Highland and Lowland marriage. Since no men of this surname were recorded as fencible men in Kintyre in 1692, nor do they appear in the 1694 Hearth Tax list of Kintyre lands, it suggests that John likely arrived there sometime between 1694 and the birth of his first child in 1703.
