| 533 | No Davidsons appear as Fencible men or in the Hearth Tax list. Two children of this name were born in Campbeltown in 1676 and 1679 to George + Jane Wilson/Watson. They likely had two successive children named George, possibly owing to the death of their first born child. There is also a George Davidson, likely their son, who is listed in the Campbeltown parish records and was married to Barbara Dunlop/Dunlap. This couple baptized two children between 1703 and 1707. Due to the fact that there was only one individual of this name listed in the OPRs, it's highly likely that the George who appears in the assize records is the same individual who was born to George and Jane Wilson/Watson, and who married Barbara Dunlop. No further information. | Davidson, George (I377)

| 543 | No marriage record could be located for this couple in the Campbeltown parish records. There is an entry for an Agnes Clark being baptized on 23 September 1676 to a James and Jane Clark [11/28]. | 550 | No marriage record was located for this couple in the Campbeltown OPRs. In the duplicate OPRs (11 series), a child named John was baptized to a couple named John Longwill and Jane Watt [507 11/50]. It's possible that this was a transcription error for Isabel. However, due to the fact that residences weren't recorded at this time, there is currently not enough evidence to attribute this child to this family. | Family: Langwill, John / Watson, Isabel (F85)

More research is needed to determine if this was an error or there actually was a John Stewart in Ballilergiemor. | Stewart, Archibald (I884)
|
| 566 | On 12 October 1709 Coll McAlister "in Askmilnbeg" received a tack to the "Mkland of Kirafuar presently possesst by Neil Fleming and the other tenants thereof. 17 years." A sasine dated 26 February 1701 lists Coll as the second son of Archibald McAllister of Askomilbeg and Finuela Boyle. Their eldest son is named John. Coll's testament dative names his brothers John McAllister of Askomilbeg (Campbeltown parish) and Alexander McAllister in Kilbride (Arran). See CC12/3/4 Since there are no surviving Highland parish records from this period, this is the only evidence that Coll was ever married or had a child. Since his family were feuars of Askomilbeg, it's likely that Coll lived there and not in Kerrafuar. 9 Sep 1687 - Rental of Archibald McAlester of Tower (Tore, Toir). | 576 | Online family trees include a son named John who was born at Drumadoon and immigrated to North Carolina, but aside from his baptismal record there is no evidence that he survived into adulthood. His absence from the later sasines indicates that he did not survive, or perhaps there was another couple of the same name living at Drumadoon during the same period. The absence of any other baptismal or marriage records for this family in Kilmory parish (in Arran) indicates that they did not live there for any extended period of time. Upon their marriage, the Duke of Argyll granted Charles land in Kilblaan parish (now Southend parish) in Kintyre, and this may explain their absence from the Kilmory parish records. Based on the available evidence, I'm not certain that John was their child, but have included him for now. | Family: McAlester, Charles of Tore / Campbell, Anna (F134)

| 717 | William Buchanan "of Glens," a merchant in Tarbert, and his spouse, More McMillan. She may have been the daughter of MacMillan of Dunmore. William Buchanan was descended from a branch of the Buchanans of Cashill who settled in Ireland. His sons were James Buchanan of Torrie, merchant in Tarbert and John Buchanan, merchant in Glasgow. See William Buchanan, (1849 reprint) A Historical and Genealogical Essay upon the Family and Surname of Buchanan, p. 104, https://openlibrary.org/books/OL24233881M/Historical_and_genealogical_essay_upon_the_family_and_surname_of_Buchanan On 6 April 1709 William Buchanan registered a heritable bond made to him by Alexander McAlaster of Loup for the liferent of the one merk land of Culnashamray, which formerly belonged to the lands of Barbule, within the parish of Knapdale, the five merk land of Ranachen [Ronachan] and Dunilkmulkich [Dunultach?] lying within the parish of Kilcalmanell. William Buchanan received a sasine from Archibald McAlester of Tarbert on 1 November 1699 for a liferent of the one merk land of Glenakill, the one merk land of Glencaloch, and the one merk land of Ballemanoch, all lying within the parish of Knapdale, ...and to John Buchanan my eldest lawful son, James Buchanan my second lawful son, and Duncan Buchanan my third lawful son. Archibald Stewart in Tangie was a witness, among others. See Index to Particular Register of Argyll Sasines, 1617–1780, p. 84. On 18 March 1714 William Buchanan registered a discharge and renunciation to Archibald McAlaster in Tarbert for the 1 merk land of "Glenmakelly of Ballymeanach with houses, biggings, etc., excepting the miln of Glenakill. It appears that Archibald McAlester in Tarbert redeemed the wadsett to these lands and repaid the original loan amount of 3100 merks Scots. On 5 January 1723 Duncan McWatie of Glenakill and Gilbert Cowan alias McDugall in Tarbert (along with the deceased Archibald McAlester of Tarbert) received a sasine from Margaret McFarlane (relict of John McFarlane) of a twenty shilling land of the two merk land of Aishines for the security on a bond dated 25 February 1719, which was originally made to John Buchanan, junior, merchant in Glasgow, of which John McFarlane spent the money himself but had put up the property as security. This would appear to confirm that Duncan McWatie "of Glenakill" was the same person as Duncan Buchanan in Tarbert, who was listed as the son of William Buchanan "of Glens." | Buchanan, William of Glens (I1300)

| 720 | William Porter was listed as a rebel in Crossibeg in 1685 (CA, p.2), see KF p. 484. In 1692, William Porter was a fencible man in Barraskimell and John Porter was a fencible man in Smerbie. There was a John born or baptized on 23 March 1679, the son of William Porter and Jane Kilpatrick in Smerbie. John may have married Jean Colvin on 18 May 1693, however, if he was the son of William Porter and Jane Kilpatrick in Smerbie, he would have only been around 14 years of age, which would have been highly unusual. This couple baptized six children between 1694 and 1713 (first son named Robert), and none were named William. I think it's more likely that John may have been the son of Robert Porter, "millner at Smerbie Miln," and Jenat Wilson, who baptized a daughter Margaret, on 25 May 1673. However, according to an 1805 memorial written by brothers John and William Porter, they claimed continual tenancy of Crossibeg for the last 120 years (since 1685). See Kintyre Families, p. 484. Based on the above evidence, it would appear that there were either multiple Porter families living in Campbeltown in Crossibeg and Smerby at the same time, or perhaps different members of the same family occupied these places simultaneously. The biggest hurdle is due to the fact that there are no residences recorded for John Porter and Jean Colvin in the parish records, which complicates a positive identification. Conversely, there appears to have been only one person named John Porter living in Campbeltown during this period. More research is needed to confirm if the person listed in the assize record was the same John who married Jean Colvin. | Porter, John (I410)
